Sound becomes movement, movement becomes sound, an Sound becomes movement, movement becomes sound, and something keeps vibrating long after the performance is over.

Yulia Frydin responds to Bar Altaras’ 'A Bird of Prey', a work that brings together sound, body, vibration and trance.

“Bar’s wounded bird fluttered inside me too.”

What happens when the work you came to see isn’t t What happens when the work you came to see isn’t there?

At the Israel Festival, Temporarily Removed, artistically directed by Eiv Kristal, turned the absence of international artists and performances into the material of the work itself.

Nofar Sela joined Prof. Erez Maayan Shalev’s tour and found herself thinking about boycott, artistic isolation, parenthood, memory, moral responsibility and the possibility of meeting one another precisely through what is missing.

“We have to be one another’s community, the best colleagues we can possibly be.”

Nofar Sela responds to Temporarily Removed as part of Creative Writing @ the Israel Festival.

Where is the male gaze in ׳The Thinking Heart?׳ R Where is the male gaze in ׳The Thinking Heart?׳

Responding to Neta Shpigelman’s work at the Israel Festival, guest writer Nadav Bossem wonders about the one voice he felt was absent from the stage: that of the male performer.

So he creates one.

In his response, Nadav writes the monologue of the performer who wasn’t there, returning to his own encounter with Etty Hillesum twenty years ago and asking what it means to read her, and understand her, from where he stands today.

“Today I am Etty. Because isn’t that what I’m doing here?”

Creative Writing at the Israel Festival! We’re so Creative Writing at the Israel Festival!

We’re so pleased to be present at this year’s festival with a special group of guest writers responding to works across the program.

First up, we’re very excited to welcome Anat Dreamer to Creative Writing with a guest post responding to Extras by Jonathan Ron.

Four performers reveal the behind-the-scenes reality of working as extras, and in particular, the task of dying on screen. Dreamer reflects on cinematic death, heroes and peripheral characters, and our complicated relationship with watching people die.

“The Duende climbs up inside you, from the soles o “The Duende climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet.”

In her response to Adva Yermiyahu’s 'Alma Galbi', Heather DeAtley writes from inside an ongoing dance with grief about the moment flamenco, through rhythm, voice and movement, allowed that grief to finally permeate her body.

A deeply personal reflection on 'Alma Galbi', Ofra Haza, flamenco, cultural memory, and the mysterious force of Duende.

What are the rules you live by? Who taught them t What are the rules you live by?

Who taught them to you?

And which ones have you never stopped to question?

In her latest Re:View, Jenny Birger reflects on 'Workout Manual' by Aharona Israel, a performance that opens up questions about movement and education, authority and ideology, and the invisible manuals that shape the way we move through the world.
