Every night, rising from the depths of the sea,
wild horses
come to graze among the clouds.
Blue children ride upon their backs,
but I am never one of them.
Wild horses,
take me with you into the sky,
so I too can turn blue beneath the moon!
But they never took me along,
because I am always white.
From “Every Night They Rise” by Nurit Zarchi, translated from Hebrew by Ori Lenkinski
As the curtain call began and thunderous applause rose from the audience, the five dancers of Eyal Dadon Dance Company offered a restrained, solemn bow. It felt as though we had experienced something extraordinary together, we in our seats, and they, who perhaps had not yet managed to shed the physicality of the noble horses they had embodied so completely throughout the work. It was a genuine moment, in the most tangible sense of the word. It had weight.
PATROL creates a fantastical world, superhuman, deeply physical, mysterious, and breathtakingly beautiful. The opening solo introduces a centauress, half woman and half horse, moving in a way I have never seen before. Together, the performers have developed a distinctive movement language for creatures that are at once powerful and delicate, wild yet regal, driven by razor-sharp instincts. The back seems to splinter into a thousand pieces, long arms sweep through space like probing antennae, the head darts from side to side. One solo gives way to another, then another, each performer taking their time. Everything in this work unfolds at its own pace.
Its choreographic foundation is established from the very beginning and gradually accumulates layer upon layer through the composition. The original score, composed by Eyal Dadon together with Gil Nemet, is equally distinctive and beautiful. Yet throughout, the work remains faithful to its singular language: a minimalist, uncluttered stage inhabited by these extraordinary centaurs, moving together and apart. Like Nurit Zarchi in her poem, I too found myself hoping that the beautiful horses who emerged from the depths onto the stage would take me with them. It didn’t matter where, I was ready to follow.
From what depths did these imaginary creatures emerge? Perhaps from Greek mythology. Perhaps from Iceland. Perhaps from a science fiction film. What is certain is that they are not from here. Their movement is noble and utterly unique. Watching them is a little like watching waves crash against the shore or staring into a fire: a force of nature that invites endless contemplation.
For almost the entire performance, the stage was illuminated by white light pouring down from high above, a choice that beautifully complemented the work’s atmosphere of mystery. As a design decision by lighting designer Felice Ross, the stage looked exquisite. At the same time, the relative darkness meant I often missed the dancers’ facial expressions, as well as a particularly clever and elegant costume detail by Hani Sirkis: numbered ribbons sewn onto each bodysuit, recalling the numbers worn by racehorses. Every member of the creative team also wore one of these ribbons onstage during the curtain call, a charming gesture of collective authorship that I only noticed when they returned to receive flowers under full lighting.
In one of the opening speeches of the Tel Aviv Dance Festival, artistic director Naomi Perlov remarked that, unlike last year, this year’s festival turns inward. Less concerned with the political and the social, the works instead dive into the depths of the body itself. PATROL is very much such a work: astonishing, otherworldly, and offering its audience a welcome respite from the reality waiting just beyond the theater doors.
Eyal Dadon Dance Company premiered PATROL on July 29, 2026 as the opening event of Tel Aviv Dance Festival.
