What remains after an encounter?

What happens when we meet someone whose experiences, beliefs, or circumstances are fundamentally different from our own? What can we learn from such encounters, and what remains with us after we part ways?

Inspired by philosopher Emmanuel Levinas’s conception of the Other, Creative Writing and Albi have joined forces at inDnegev 2026 to explore questions of otherness, responsibility, and human connection through writing.

For Levinas, encountering another person is not necessarily about understanding them, finding common ground, or overcoming our differences. It begins with recognizing the existence of someone whose experience of the world we can never fully know.

As part of this collaboration, we invited artists Carmen Elmakiyes Amos and Shira Shvarodov (Shiwa Biwa) to respond to the idea of the Other through their own artistic perspectives. Their contributions offer different points of departure for considering what it means to encounter another person.

At inDnegev, these reflections form the starting point for a participatory writing project. Festival visitors are invited to recall encounters with people different from themselves and consider what remains after those meetings. Their handwritten responses become part of a collective installation, an evolving collection of memories, experiences, and perspectives.

The project makes room for encounters that are fleeting, uncomfortable, surprising, or transformative. Encounters that lead to understanding and those that do not.

We don’t need to agree to give meaning to our meetings.

Our bodies are among the most significant tools available to us for perceiving and recognizing another person. The intercorporeal connection formed in the brain, partly through the activity of mirror neurons, may even dissolve the feeling that the person before us is a stranger, someone unfamiliar, and awaken an initial sense of empathy.Read more

We grew up in the same home, sharing the same childhood memories, yet today our lives are far apart along almost every conceivable axis. She is ultra-Orthodox (a follower of Chabad), while I am traditional. In this work, the complex encounter between us takes place in front of a mirror. The mirror is, ostensibly, the antithesis of the Other, a place where we are accustomed to searching only for ourselves. But when we stand before it together, the mirror begins to crack. It forces us to look not only at our own reflection, but at the reflection of the Other within ourselves.Read more
