Yuval Gal on Birdy by Lai Hung-Chung

Birdy- Lai Hung Chung

*english follows

A duet,

Man,

Woman.

In every creation there is a language,

In every language there is movement.

Which one?

This couple from Taiwan are incredible. A (certain) technique that is truly grand. I don’t discount it for even a second. I understand the significance of this physicality. It must be said that technique is important, there is nothing like it, it protects the dancer from countless things, moves the dancer and the observer. Technique comes into my body when I use it, sometimes it can become my language, which is not a bad thing. It is something I am aware of. But sometimes it sneaks in like heavy sleep on a long train ride.

But what is technique?

Is technique virtuosity? Is technique control?

Perhaps technique is an optional language that I, in 2017, must be aware if I choose or opt out of. In this piece there are bird-like movements, movements of supporting and being supported, movements of a relationship, movements of masculinity or femininity. And there are physical forms from different languages that evoke a certain technique. This technique doesn’t demonstrate virtuosity or control rather a certain type of muteness.

When I choose movements I choose expression and when technique exists in a creation it is as if a linguistics lesson overtook my tongue.

Birdy by Lai Hung-Chung was presented on December 1 as part of the 2017 International Choreography Competition hosted by Machol Shalem Dance House.
