I discovered the album “Ringing of Bells” by Ahuva Ozeri in a music store in the Malcha Mall fifteen years ago. The first listens flooded me with inspiration the intensity of which I had not experienced at that point. Two things were clear- the first that this was the material from which the subconscious is made, the second that one day this music would be the inspiration for an homage to Ahuva. Intimadance 2019, Renana Raz and Ofer Amram, the loving and beloved, told me that this year the theme is “icon”. How could I not- the time had come to dive.

I read all of the texts that Ahuva had written, watched and listened to every interview with her, searched after the recurring elements throughout her career (at the center of almost every song is the relationship between sight and sound, between what is present and what is missing). I tried to understand what this music was made of, how one could make such enchanted music. So here:

Ahuva is 8 years old, her mother tells her, “you, every time you sing, someone cries” and sends her to sing in funeral homes in the Yemenite Quarter. In Jewish law there is a beautiful law that says that you cannot bury the dead before someone has cried over them. Without crying, their soul cannot be freed. “In those days, there weren’t refrigerators yet so the dead would lie in the home until the burial- and if none of the family members were able to cry, they would send a lamenter. That was the job,” she told.

The lamentation ritual’s source is in Ireland and Scotland. The tradition was a last opportunity for all of the friends and acquaintances of the departed to speak to them. The lamentation is opened by the closest person to the dead or the most esteemed. The calls and wailing are heard loudly, they are heart wrenching, lengthy and require a high threshold for suffering. When the voice of the lamenter runs out, another lamenter replaces them. The vocal lamentation is done by a single woman or a choir of women. While one is singing, the others execute rocking or kneeling movements or clapping.

In Judaism, the ritual is comprised of improvised singing that contains wailing or crying, whose purpose is to shake those present, to bring them to tears and to break through to the inner walls of the heart to enable the process of mourning to begin.

“The moment they would cry, I would run back to soccer,” she remembered of herself as a child lamenter.

The truth is that Ahuva was a vessel of joy that was altogether motivated by music and the love of the crowd. The center of her life was always performances at parties and weddings. One day, in 1973, a record company called her and said, “we’ve heard you; we want to record an album with you.”

-Ahuva, who only loved to sing in front of a live audience, vehemently declined but, in the end, she agreed to try. They recorded “Where is the Soldier” in two-and-a-half hours. They just sand the songs as if it were a show in the studio. The album was a huge success. The title track from the album was written about Ahuva’s sister’s son, who went missing during the Six Day War. In ’73, the country was struck by loss and mourning. Too many had lost their loved ones to war and the song was so painful that it was banned from radio and television broadcasts for several years. People couldn’t handle the sadness.

“Where is my soldier?

When will I feel his hand?

When will I run to him?

Letters he doesn’t post

Regards he doesn’t even send

Please help, help me friends

Why is everyone quiet?

Why don’t they talk?

Is he not, not alive?

In the coming years, she made a series of five successful albums. After the fifth album, she could no longer ignore the series of tragic events that occurred in her family in parallel to each album’s release. Once it was her sister’s son, then her brother, then her brother’s son, then her mother and then her cousin. Each time she released an album- someone died. The connection between her singing and death became too strong for her and she decided to stop singing.

For twenty years, she didn’t sing, perform or record another album. She focused on vocal instruction (to Zohar Argov for example) and on being Israel’s greatest kabob-maker at a friend’s restaurant in the neighborhood.

In 1999, she finally agreed to return to the studio- the album “Ringing of Bells” is released into the world and it is an unprecedented hit that wins attention she had never known. It garners acclaim far beyond the reaches of the Yemenite Quarter.

As soon as the album comes out- Ahuva gets cancer of the throat. 10% chance to live. 5 life-threatening surgeries, after one of which she is told that they must remove her vocal cords. She survives. For half a year she produces no sound at all. As soon as her throat heals, she asks the doctors, “will I sing again?”

“No chance. There is no one in the world that has managed to sing without vocal cords.”

“I’ll live?”

“Yes.”

“Then I will sing!”

She sits on her bed for a full year and presses on her throat, trying to teach herself how to sing in spite of all the odds. One day, she watches a television documentary about whales. She learns that the sound whales produce permeates a radius of 15 kilometers- without vocal cords. Just through the passing of air through a hollow tube in their backs. “If the whale can do it, so can I.” And so she sets out on a long and hopeless journey through the endless unknown. For six years, she presses on the hole in her throat, trying to imitate the movements of the extracted vocal cords, teaching herself the whale’s technique.

One day- Do Rae Me. Ahuva becomes a medical miracle in the world.

Not only does she succeed in returning to sing, she reaches a level of virtuosic mastery of the movements of air in the throat. Revolutionary even for skilled singers.

Some years after her meeting with the whale, she released the album “Silence Above Me”, in which the best Israeli singers channel her lyrics and compositions through their voices. The album becomes a huge success. Ahuva even sings one song on it, without vocal cords. The song is called “I Burrowed”.

After the success of the album, the producer says, “now let’s make an album that you sing all of the songs on, without vocal cords.” After convincing, she agrees- she starts to work on the album, her cancer returns and Ahuva dies.

The fated connection between the voice and death, which began at age 8, comes to a close at age 64.

An 8-year-old lamenter,

5 albums with tragic powers,

A 20-year silence,

A first attempt to return to sing- removal of vocal cords.

Whale

The song returns.

She wants to return to record

With endless remorse, no.

The English word is Lament.

The sound a whale makes is called Lament.

Another word for lamentation is To Wail.

The meeting becomes clear- Ahuva isn’t here, the whale reverberates.

In Intimadance 2019 the performances “Whale’s Lament” will run, which is an opportunity to dive into a dark abyss, to close eyes and sink into subterranean listening and physical sound vibrations, which are composed of a duet between a whale and a human’s voices.
